I found a copy used at Logos (RIP) in Santa Cruz.An epic collection of Bechdel's comic strip about the lives of a group of lesbian friends which ran from 1983 to 2008. Every strip has so much going on, little vignettes looking at the political anThree and a half stars. I did really enjoy the stories, I just found it hard to read due to the format.
I think most of it is just that I couldn't connect with the characters, although judging by the reviews that might not be a problem with the book as much as by the fact that I don't have a lot in common with them. After reading both of Bechdel's graphic memoirs a couple of years ago, I was psyched to read her comic strip. A collection of articles that covered the same period of time and range of subjects would have to be vast enough to fill a bookcase. You can see the way that American society evolves over time as news events, wars, governments and Presidents come and go, the economy evolves and attitudes towards LGBT people change. Moments of humor are not significant enough distractions from the repeating of old politics and current events that are no longer current.

Never read this "essential" collection, but have read several of the individual volumes, and once upon a time, even read some of the strips as they came out in various cities I lived in around the U.S. But once I settled in I really enjoyed it.

Her work is so vivacious and alive that I never would have thought her to be so shy. It ends just after Obama’s won and while many of the characters had issues with the Democratic Party (which are fully earned) it was disheartening fo realize how hard the LGBTQ has struggled and how hard the fucking Republicans are working to take all of their victories away.A historically important classic that does not age well and is a fair slog to get through. Her drawings are playful (check out the endlessly amusing t-shirt slogans, signage, and book/newspaper copy in the background of many frames for added commentary), sexy, and spot-on.
