The appointment is part of a re-structuring of the leadership team of the school which includes the appointment of Gordonstoun alumnus and current Head of the Senior School, Titus Edge, as Headmaster and Hugh Brown the Finance Director. To many born since the millennium, separation from devices can feel like surgical amputation. Instead of arriving in Chapel and immediately getting out their smartphones and entering the world of texts, snapchat and Instagram, students were engaging with each other in person; they were holding conversations, sharing jokes, catching up with each other, and doing so face to face, not via social media.
Titus Edge, Headmaster of the highly acclaimed boarding school, Gordonstoun, based in Elgin, Scotland, visited Fareham College today to observe and learn about the business of running this graded Outstanding by Ofsted and TES UK College of the Year, at first hand. Mr Devey is hugely popular amongst both pupils and staff alike, having held the position of deputy head previously. Parents and staff would of course understand the influence of mobile devices has not been entirely positive; that there is significant evidence that points to the negative impact that continual access to social media has on young people’s stress levels, their ability to concentrate and to enjoy healthy social relationships.To my surprise and delight, the students have embraced the new policy, with only the occasional lapse into old habits. At first I was uncertain as to its cause. The noise was that of excited, animated, happy human interaction and wonderful to hear at the start of each day.In deciding that, from the start of this term, students were no longer going to be allowed to use their devices during the school day, I had anticipated a considerable backlash from at least some sections of the student body. It is of course so much more than a simple ritual; it is a community to coming together for about 20 minutes at the start of each day, helping to create the cohesive and inclusive atmosphere of which to school is rightly proud. One of the daily rituals of Gordonstoun life which I cherish is morning Chapel at 8.15. Having time to think and order our lives each morning in Chapel, having a tangible sense of community that comes together each day, and having the space to forge true human relationships beyond the width of any broadband are key ingredients to that success.© Gordonstoun School. Mr Devey has said that his top priority as head will be “to bring out the best in every child.”The 53-year-old added: “Inspiring a willingness in the next generation to provide service to the community is more relevant than it’s ever been, so I hope to combine on-call duties as a retained firefighter with this important new role.“At Gordonstoun we believe it is very important students are willing to put the needs of others ahead of their own. He replaces Titus Edge, who has been headmaster of Gordonstoun for seven years.Gordonstoun is known for educating three generation of the Royal family and was recently rated as “outstanding” by HM inspectors.In his career as a retained firefighter, Mr Devey has attended over 230 incidents, including pumping floodwater out of Elgin homes during the floods of 1997 and 2000.Mr Devey is a proud crew member of the fire unit that is based within Gordonstoun’s campus.
