He is, after all, sometimes referred to as the Father of the Graphic Novel. HOWEVER, there are glimmers of hope to be found if the reader knows where and how to look for it. WTF was that all about? It was even better. Will Eisner’s Contract with God is no different. Unfortunately, Artist’s Edition format books still get very little pre-publication attention from publishers. It's supposed to be the first graphic novel and all of it looks like newspaper comics. It's clever and sad and warm and shocking and authentic and realistic and true and all that, but, and I know I have no authority to doubt the man whose name is on the awards, soon enough into this trilogy you get the sense his view of life and urbanization and childhood is the only correct way to think/live. It's intense. The third traces the history of the location from the first European settlers to the 20th Century. It's definitely different than anything else I've read.

I liked this book, but it was an oddly long, slow read, considering how much of it is pictures. Some are true. I wouldn't have picked it up if it hadn't been recommended to me by a friend. No margin notes but that’s not surprising for someone doing all the work. Eisner tells us that his goal in A Contract with God, a book that has become famous for being the "first" graphic novel, was to create an art work in which there is "no interruption in the flow of narrative because the picture and the text are so totally dependent on each other as to be inseparable" (preface). One page in Pencils and eighteen pages in Inks are from production pages.
I grant you it's not nearly as salty and saucy as the average commercial today for, say, children's cereal, but there's a fair amount of rough language and bareness for a "classic," though you know how old fashioned I am. Of course, it's also technically three books in one, which could explain it.This story is not for the faint of heart. Well, color me red and call me a strawberry, I can finally say I have.Three graphic novels in one volume. That's about it, really. Eisner tackles pretty much every social issue you could think of. But dont get me wrong, these are not negative aspects of the book.One of the best graphic novels I’ve ever read, but not one of my favourite... if that makes sense?
