Awesome fantasy, great for secondary schools and up
Alice knew that somewhere out there she had a grandmother that lived on her estate, the Hazel Wood, although Alice had never been to meet or visit her. I'm bummed about this one... [especially with Finch just being like "cheerio I'm staying". The book was inspired by my obsession with classic portal fantasy, fairy tales, and contemporary-set fantasies like The Magicians; by an image I had in my head of a fairy-tale character breaking into the real world; and by my infatuation with general spec-fic weirdness: doors to the unknown, books that might be cursed, stories that live and breathe...Holy Hinterland crows, that was good. I found this an interesting premise that was reasonably well executed, however it was let down by pacing issues, a sudden change in tone and style half way through and an inconclusive ending. I haven't particularly read any fantasy books (other than repeatedly rereading Harry Potter) and it was refreshing to read this.This book was AMAZING!! I found myself skimming the description of things to get to the point. Fantastic, really; utterly compelling, intriguing and, at times, chillingly creepy too. Read this at night, with a cup of tea and the lights dimmed so you can be scared silly like I was. The first half of the book is fairly aimless, involving a lot of wandering around and an overly long road trip. It ended well enough to stand on its own but I’m also delighted to see that there’s now an upcoming sequel. I will read more from this author in the future because I know she has potential to write a book I’ll love, but this one just was not it. The Hazel Wood. I really enjoy the darker side of fairy tales and so the premise here was right up my street. The sections set in the hinterland were beautiful. This book was AMAZING!! Wow, this book was good.
