I bought this on vinyl back in the 1970s and it still remains one of my favourite Bryan Ferry LPs. The album is considered to be a departure from Roxy Music's sound, because it consists entirely of cover versions, mainly of standard songs. Brilliant updates of classic crooner songs, 1960s pop and soul, and Bob Dylan and Rolling Stones compositions. These Foolish Things is the debut solo studio album by Bryan Ferry, who at the time was still Roxy Music's lead vocalist. Throughout Ferry's instantly recognizable croon carries everything to a tee, and the overall mood is playful and celebratory. On These Foolish Things, it's the perfect setup for the album's centerpiece, an improbable rendition of It's My Party (yes, the Lesley Gore song) that is nothing short of pop perfection. Ferry's versions of These Foolish Things and A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall have never been bettered.
