Bob Mankoff, the cartoon editor of The New Yorker, has written a memoir about cartooning. Today’s guest on the show is Esquire’s Cartoon and Humor Editor, Bob Mankoff.

Robert "Bob" Mankoff (born May 1, 1944) is an American cartoonist, editor, and author.He was the cartoon editor for The New Yorker for nearly twenty years. His works are about the Unseen (esoteric), Balance (duality), and Energy; what Asoka calls the “three keys”. “Now, even Canadians take offense at being stereotyped as polite.”Mankoff jokes about the shift, but when he inherited the lofty office from Lee Lorenz, he had to cultivate cartoonists who worked in comic tones increasingly absurd and meta — talents who, “when they use a cliche, they destroy it,” he likes to say.Mankoff’s numerous New Yorker accomplishments sprang from the seeds of rejection. He went on to direct comedy spots for Sony Playstation, Nick at Nite and Miller.
Bob Mankoff lives and breathes cartoons. I had the opportunity to visit Bob at the Esquire offices and we had a serious conversation about humor.
