There are many references do Monty Python and Harry Potter, what is also quite funny.Fforde's 'Thursday Next' series are superb (the first 4 anyways) but he has floundered when branching out and this adaptation suffers strongly from being a Sky One (for UK TV) movie and ends up tonally and visually a carbon copy of the slightly lacklustre Pratchett productions they made.The comparison with Pratchett can only lessen your production as it competes with Pratchett's characters, if not the performances. It will be nice if someone makes a serious go at a Jasper Fforde book into film. A 'spellbinding' TV movie based on the popular novel of the same name.Although I didn't understood parts of the storyline. There is nothing to write home about, but this family (obviously made-for-TV) movie is not without its charms.

It has has enough dragons, wizards, villains, magic and mayhem to keep the kids enthralled, but it is all done in such a clever, quirky, tongue-in-cheek way that adults should enjoy it too. True, the special effects are not cutting edge, but they are quite adequate for the purpose and I didn't have a problem. They will bring many a smile to adult faces even as the kids are on the edge of their seats wanting to know what happens.

The probably lower budget than most screened fantasy movies is no problem for creative minds and good taste: even not amazing special effects appear as charming and give the film a vintage spirit. Okay, it's obviously low budget for an effects film, and doesn't have any A-list actors in it, but it has wit and charm aplenty. It also inspired me to more thoroughly purge the TV movies from my Weird, a little bonkers even, and yet very entertaining.
